ESPN Winter X-Games VII

Scroll down for Pictures

January 30th through February 2nd marked the seventh running of the ESPN Winter X-Games in Aspen, Colorado. Kurt qualified for the Hillcross competition at the games, which is an enormous achievement. The team spent several weeks building and preparing a machine capable of running with the big boys of the sport, and when they arrived in Aspen their goal was met, this machine rocked. After several hours of testing at high altitude in Aspen, Kurt and his sled were ready for the task at hand. The games were ongoing for several days before the Hillcross competition, so the whole team was able to take in some of the best extreme sports events on the planet. Once Sunday rolled around, it was go time, and everything and everyone seemed poised to win. In the first round of qualifying, Kurt made a hard charge to the front of the pack at about a quarter of the way up the hill, everything looked good until he hit an off camber jump and was shot right off the track and off his sled, also spraining his ankle. Then came round 2, with his ankle taped up Kurt was ready to go, again he made an aggressive charge to the front only to get together with Tucker Hibbert and again get dismounted. Things remained the same in round three, a big let down for Kurt as he hit a big jump that jarred some controls and killed the machine, ending his hopes for being first to the top at this years games. Some other hopefuls had the same kind of luck though, which just goes to show that it can happen to anyone at anytime. There was definitely some good things to come of this experience though, Kurt now knows how to test and tune his machines, the team worked together better and harder than ever before, and everyone got to meet and see some of the best athletes in the world. Now the team moves forward to the Hillcross season back in the Midwest, after the lessons learned in Aspen, everyone is ready to rule the hills back home and make an honest charge at qualifying for the 2004 X-Games.
